Deadly dengue stings Kolkata kids

Kolkata: The city is not far behind when it comes to battling the mosquito menace like the rest of the country. The number of dengue cases is on the rise in Kolkata and some the worst affected patients are children.

Sudha Srivastava's one and a half year old daughter Vaishali was admitted to the Marwari Relief Society hospital after being detected with dengue on Thursday.

"The doctor asked me to wipe her body with cold water every time the temperature rose. I could not control my tears. During this season I usually wrap her in woolens and this year she is admitted here," Sudha said.

Vaishali has been running temperature for more than a week now. Her blood test reports confirmed dengue after she was tested for both malaria and dengue. Her mother did not know much about the disease and the family was distraught when they heard the news.

"The entire family has gone berserk. We didn't know what to do. Even after we came to the hospital, we couldn't rest in peace," Sudha says.

Like Vaishali, there are many other patients are coming to the hospital with dengue. Nine-year-old Anita was admitted on Sunday morning and is recovering now.

But as the number of dengue cases is increasing, the municipal corporation claims it's taking steps like increased defogging to check the outbreak.
