HOW RICH PEOPLE SPEND THEIR TIME

HOW RICH PEOPLE SPEND THEIR TIME

People invariably believe that money can make them happy -- and rich people usually do report being happier than poor people do. But if this is the case, shouldn`t wealthy people spend a lot more time doing enjoyable things than poor people?

Nobel Prize-winning behavioral economist Daniel Kahneman has found, however, that being wealthy is often a powerful predictor that people spend less time doing pleasurable things, and more time doing compulsory things and feeling stressed.

People who make less than $20,000 a year, for example, told Kahneman and his colleagues that they spend more than a third of their time in passive leisure -- watching television, for example. Those making more than $100,000 spent less than one-fifth of their time in this way -- putting their legs up and relaxing. Rich people spent much more time commuting and engaging in activities that were required as opposed to optional. The richest people spent nearly twice as much time as the poorest people in leisure activities that were active, structured and often stressful -- shopping, child care and exercise.

Kahneman and his colleagues argued that many people mistakenly allocate enormous amounts of their time and psychological focus to getting rich because of a mental illusion: When they think about what it would mean to be wealthy, they think about how enjoyable it would be to watch a flat-screen TV set, play lots of sports or get a lot of pampering -- our stereotypical beliefs of how the rich spend their time.

"In reality," Kahneman and his colleagues wrote in a paper they published in the journal Science, "they should think of spending a lot more time working and commuting and a lot less time engaged in passive leisure."

Dasavatharam Review

Dasavatharam (Review)

dasavataram
Movie
Dasavatharam

Director
K.S.Ravikumar

Producer
Aaskar V. Ravichandran

Music
Himesh Reshammiya

Cast
Kamal Hassan (in 10 roles), Asin,
Mallika Sherawat, M.S.Bhaskar, Napolean

Kamal Hassan`s die-hard fans will love him in his 10 different avatars. But for many others,
Dasavatharam will fall short of the huge expectation and hype it had generated.

So what went wrong? It had absolutely no story to speak of, and the twists and turns were predictable. In the end, it turned out to be a routine film rendered more aggravating by its incessant near-miss plot structure. You desperately want to like the film for its maddeningly zany characters played out by
Kamal Hassan. Alas! There`s only so much life an actor can pump into a moribund script. It once again proves the old theory that, without a proper story and script, no film, however big the actors are, can succeed.

Watched Dasavatharam? Send us the review at albertindian2000@yahoo.com

The plot of Dasavatharam

The film opens in the 12th century where Rangaraja Nambi (Kamal Hassan), a staunch Vaishnavite, opposes the removal of Lord Vishnu`s idol by King Kulothunga Chozhan (Napoleon), who is a strong believer of Shiva. Nambi is punished and thrown into the deep sea tied to the idol. His wife Kothai (Asin) also kills herself. Then the story cuts to the US where Dr Govind (Kamal) discovers a deadly virus, which catches the attention of the government including President George Bush (Kamal). But his boss tries to sell the vial to the enemies and now it's the turn of our hero to protect it from causing damage.

Dr Govind is pursued by a former CIA agent-turned-mercenary Keith Fletcher (Kamal) and his Tamil interpreter (Mallika Sherawat), who land up in Tamil Nadu. An array of other characters are drawn into the chase—Balram Naidu (Kamal), the Telugu speaking RAW chief, a Chinese martial arts teacher (Kamal) thirsting to take revenge on Fletcher, Vincent Poovarahan (Kamal) a Dalit activist , Krishnaveni Patti (Kamal), Khalifullah Khan (Kamal) and a Punjabi pop singer Avatar Singh(Kamal). Andal, a Brahmin girl, is also unwittingly drawn into a long chase. What follows is a cat and mouse game till the Tsunami climax.

It`s actually hard to believe that in this age of experimentation within the commercial format, the director could think of such a moth-balled story. The earlier Kamal films in which he played dual or multiple roles, like Avvai Shanmukhi, Michael Madan Kamaraj and Indian, were far superior in style and content compared to his latest 10 avatars.

The trouble with the format is that far too many characters of the actor criss-cross without any reason—or they don't make any difference to the story. It is obvious that characters like the Punjabi pop singer Avatar Singh, the tall Khalifullah Khan, the Japanese martial arts expert , etc., are unnecessarily stitched together to make it a perfect 10. The real crisis point in the film is nebulous. The film also coasts along at a doleful pace—185 minutes. Kamal's prosthetic makeup, especially as George Bush, Fletcher and Khan, is a bit of a dampener. But Brian Jennings' special effects, mainly of the climax Tsunami scene, are top class by Indian standards.

Will Dasavatharam be bigger than Sivaji? Tell us at albertindian2000@yahoo.com

Himesh Reshammiya's music is nothing much to talk about other than Kallai Mattum. But Devi Sri Prasad's background score is superb and makes up for everything. Cinematographer Ravi Varman may take a bow, as his camerawork is glossy and superb. The big plus for watching the movie is the one-man acting school, Kamal Hassan. He pitches in yet another fantastic performance. Among the 10 avataars, the pick of the lot is Naidu the bumbling cop, as the actor is able to bring out his impeccable sense of comic timing.
Asin looks cute as the chirpy Andal, but beyond a point her character irritates you with her frequent Perumale.. calls. Her dubbing is top class and deserves special mention. Mallika Sherawat, in a brief role sizzles. M.S.Bhaskar and napolean in small roles shines.

Yes, the film is hugely flawed, but it is still worth a look for its overall packaging and richness in production value.

There is no relationship between Ash and me - Abhishek

There`s no relationship between Ash and me - Abhishek

Abhishek Bachchan will be seen in one of the most powerful characters of his career in Sarkar Raj. He disagrees that it is his character that takes the centre stage in the movie ahead of Amitabh Bachchan. He discusses with us about the movie in a short chat.

How different are you and your father in Sarkar Raj as compared with Sarkar?
In Sarkar Raj, Pa would be seen with an added slouch. Pa had to be shown aged since the first part of the film. Time has passed and we see it in his performance, and mine. My character has more responsibility on his shoulders. Earlier my character was hungry and lean eager to prove himself. Now I`m a more a confident and successful man.

I believe you`ve put on weight for the role?
I have. We wanted to show Shankar Nagre as not heavy, but healthier than he was in the first part…as a successful well-settled man. Even my clothes in Sarkar Raj have changed. In Sarkar, I was more casually dressed. In Sarkar Raj, I`m more formally attired in a suit all through.

You know more about sequels than your colleagues?
Sarkar Raj isn`t my first sequel. I`ve also done Dhoom 2. But there`s a difference. For Dhoom 2, Aditya Chopra`s brief was to take the brand further. He wanted to make the sequel bigger and better. Otherwise, he reasoned, why would they come to see it? Sarkar Raj on the other hand, moved the other way. It`s not a candyfloss entertainer. We had to be true to the original characters. The characters moved in a specific direction from the first part to the second. So there has to be a lot of intensity in the presentation. In Sarkar Raj, we couldn`t afford the liberties that we could in Dhoom 2.

Experimenting with body language and weight are now a part of your acting grammar. I guess today, an actor has to work hard to be noticed. So does the director. In Sarkar Raj, it`s not just my character`s weight that has changed. The house the characters live in has become more plush.

This time you take centre stage in the drama?
I disagree. Sarkar is Subhash Nagre which is dad`s character. But now Shankar is running the family business. But his father is still the head of the family. So we`re in it together."

But you and Aishwarya are not a couple in Sarkar Raj?
Does that matter to the audience? Once the lights go down in the theatre the audience becomes one with the characters. If they don`t it`s my failing as an actor. They will be swept away with the characters. Whether we`re married or a couple in the film is of no consequence. I think such cheap publicity gimmicks don`t work. And yes we haven`t tried to hide the fact that we aren`t a couple in the film. No point in lying to the audience. In fact, there`s no relationship between Aishwarya and me in Sarkar Raj. And that should be no problem. Just because we`re husband and wife doesn`t mean we should play the same roles in all our films.

But what about the strong media -created image of you as a couple?
No, I`m convinced the audience isn`t going to take that factor into consideration. My father and I do play father and son in Sarkar Raj. But we weren`t related at all in Bunty Aur Babli. In fact, he was hunting me down throughout the film. And yet it was a resounding success.

How much have you evolved as an actor since Sarkar?
I`d like to think my character has evolved since the first part and that I`ve evolved accordingly. But like I said, Jai Dixit could change his looks and clothes from Dhoom to Dhoom 2. I don`t think it`d look believable to see me in a t-shirt, jeans and clean-shaven in Sarkar Raj. As for myself, without sounding arrogant I`d like to say I think I`ve evolved as an actor. I`m still learning and I`ll be learning till the day I`m an actor. Look at my father at 65. He continues to evolve. In comparison to him there`s a long way to go. I`d like to believe I`m evolving.

Dad stays away from Neha Uberoi premiere

Dad stays away from Neha Uberoi premiere

Neha UberoiIt was supposed to be a dream day for Neha Uberoi. But the fun of her debut Bollywood film Woodstock Villa premiering on the same day as her 23rd birthday was somewhat spoilt by her father himself staying away from it. The reason was the ongoing war between the film`s producer Sanjay Gupta and actor Sanjay Dutt who has launched his own production house. Gupta, incidentally, is Neha`s uncle. Obviously no one even remotely associated with Dutt`s production house showed up at the premiere.

Neha`s father Dharam Uberoi, who used to work for Gupta`s White Feather and is now closely associated with Dutt, stayed away from the premiere. The film, released last Friday, co-stars Sikandar Kher. "There was no question of attending the premiere even if it was my daughter`s big day. I`ve my entire life to devote to her happiness and career. Yes, I regret I couldn`t be there for her. But I`ve moved on. I wish Mr Gupta all the best in life," Uberoi said.

Neha, confused but excited, tried to put up a brave face. "I don`t even want to think about these things. I just want to concentrate on my premiere night and my career. As far as Woodstock Villa is concerned I`ve no complaints.

"I got a launch any newcomer would die for. I play a kidnapped wife in my very first film. And I`m happy for the unconventional launch. I don`t think the audience is interested in a new girl and boy holding hands and running across pristine meadows in slow motion.

"Not that my launch is entirely unconventional. I`ve four songs in Woodstock Villa. And I`ve my father and Sanjay Dutt`s expertise in the business to guide me. So no regrets at all," Neha said.

Not even about the fact that her rather-attractive voice was dubbed in her debut film? "Well, that is rather unfortunate. But being dubbed is not a new experience for me. I`ve done two Telugu films where I couldn`t speak my own lines. But I`ve dubbed for myself in my next film Hindi film EMI (which is produced by Suniel Shetty`s Popcorn Entertainment) and in Soham Shah`s Luck. "I leave for South Africa to shoot for Luck with Imran Khan (Aamir`s nephew). So I`ve a lot to look forward to."

Neha had an early birthday celebration. "I brought it in with my family and retired early because I knew I had a big long night the following day for my premiere."

Universal Studios is on fire

Large fire devours movie sets at Universal Studios

LOS ANGELES - A large fire tore through a back lot at Universal Studios early Sunday, destroying a set from "Back to the Future," the King Kong exhibit and a video vault containing more than 40,000 videos and reels.

The blaze broke out on a backlot sound stage in a set featuring New York brownstones facades around 4:30 a.m. Sunday at the 400-acre property, but was contained later in the day, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Michael Freeman said.

Roughly 40,000 to 50,000 videos and reels were damaged in the vault, but there were duplicates stored in a different location, NBC Universal President and Chief Operating Officer Ron Meyer said.

"Nothing is lost forever," Meyer said.

The videos included every film that Universal has produced and footage from television series` like "Miami Vice" and "I Love Lucy." Firefighters recovered hundreds of those titles from the vault, Freeman said.

The iconic courthouse square from "Back to the Future," was also destroyed, Freeman said, and the famous clock tower that enabled star Michael J. Fox`s character to time travel was damaged.

The King Kong exhibit is a stop on the studio`s tram tour where the giant ape bellows at passengers and artificial banana scent fills the area, studio spokesman Eliot Sekuler said.

Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Daryl Jacobs said as many as three blocks of movie facades were destroyed, including two mock New York and New England streets used for filmmaking and tourist displays.

A commercial shoot was going on when the fire broke out, Sekuler said. The cause of the fire was under investigation. Universal Studios is located nine miles north of downtown Los Angeles that has thrill rides and a back lot where movies and television shows are filmed. One of the more familiar back lot attractions is the house featured in "Psycho."

Scenes from several blockbuster films and television shows have been filmed at the studios, including "War of the Worlds," "When Harry met Sally" and "Scrubs."

The fire however will not affect the 2008 MTV Movie Awards, which is to broadcast live Sunday night from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, according to the music network.

Meyer said the park would open at noon Sunday, and on a typical weekend day about 25,000 people visit the theme park. However, tram tours would avoid the King Kong attraction, Sekuler said.

More than 100 firefighters try to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby brush. A thick column of smoke rose thousands of feet into the air and for a time helicopters swept in to drop water. Three firefighters had minor injuries.
