Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar - Hero, Villain or Victim?

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar - Hero, Villain or Victim?

Sachin Tendulkar. No other name in Indian cricket arises as much passion and emotion as his. No one else in the history of the game has had to carry the burden of such huge expectation and demands like he has. In a country where cricket is more than a game Sachin Tendulkar has gone about his job with an unbelievable humility and has his feet firmly planted on the ground. For this alone he should be admired.

From the time Sachin made his debut as a 16 yr school boy the spotlight has always been focused on him. When he came into the team he was hailed as the next Sunil Gavaskar. Gavaskar for his part took great interest in mentoring his fellow Mumbaite, a relationship that continues even today. After he had made his mark in the away tours of England and Australia he has always been hailed simultaneously as both a hero and villain. No one in the history of cricket might have had his game as minutely scrutinized, dissected and discussed as Tendulkar's. But what is he really? Is he really a hero who with his skills mesmerizes a country of 1 billion or is he an opportunistic villain who abandons the same people who worship him in the time of need? Maybe the answer lies somewhere in between.

Tendulkar's skill has never been in question. His longevity and statistics alone are proof enough for that. However there is this raging debate that he hasn't won enough matches for India in the past. There are two ways to look at this. If you look at his ODI career around the mid 90s to the early part of the millennium you can see that whenever Sachin has got a good score the team inevitably went on to win the match. This was the time when he was at his peak and he was opening the innings with regularity. In those days there was none more reliable than Sachin Tendulkar in the Indian team. Remember those days, when people used to turn off their television sets if he got out early. Whatever support he got from other team members were viewed mostly as a surprise. On those rare occasions when someone else put their hands up we were pinching ourselves with disbelief. Sachin was a one man army in those days. He made us forget that cricket is fundamentally a team game played by individuals.

We might argue that Sachin was not able to translate his good form or scores into test victories abroad. Yes very true. He was not able to. But we forget that tests are won by the side taking 20 wickets. It's more of a bowler's game than a batsmen's. One look at our bowling attack and we can see why we never won enough tests abroad during Sachin's peak. Baring Srinath there was no other fast bowler worth mentioning. Our best bowler then was a Kumble, a spinner. To win matches abroad we need atleast 3 good bowlers. I believe we would have won more matches if we had the current bowling attack then.

Another counter argument that might come up is that Sachin was never able to save enough test matches let alone win it. To a major extent this is true. Sachin woefully let down all and sundry whenever the team was in dire straits. But to say that he has never done so would be unfair on the man. Neither is it fair to say this was due to his ineptitude alone. Remember the test against Pakistan in Chennai when Sachin braving a serious back injury soldiered on to take us to 16 runs short of victory. We could have still won the match with 3 wickets in hand. We lost the match by 12 runs. For argument's sake one can say that he should have been there till the end. But the fact remains that there was no support for him from the team. There have been countless other instances where he has made centuries in a losing cause. There have been countless more when he has disappointed us. But pray tell me other than Dravid now which other Indian batsman has fulfilled his promise time and time again as many times as Sachin did in those days. He has an average above 54 away from home which few batsmen can boast of.

His captaincy is also subject to much ridicule. We tend to forget that most of the series that were played under his captaincy were away series. Which Indian captain before him has had success away from home? It is not until recently that India started changing its fortunes away from home. This is largely due to the new young breed of fast bowlers that we have unearthed. Tendulkar never had that luxury. He very often never received the players he wanted. The team that he took to Australia in 1999-2000 must have been the worst ever. Not to mention several of his team mates were involved in the match fixing scandal forcing him to quit the captaincy in disgust.

So why do we question Sachin Tendulkar and his ability so much? The answer lies in that Sachin has had the misfortunate to be living in a media driven world. A world where every couch potato, who has never set foot on a cricket pitch in his lifetime, starts voicing their “expert” opinion for the whole world to hear.

He was projected as an icon by us because at the time of his prominence there was nobody else who could hold a candle to him. He was the sole beacon of light when there was only gloom and despair all around him. Now we criticize him because he is not the same player as he was. What did we expect? That he is a modern day Peter Pan? Yes he has aged. Yes he is not the same player as he was. But tell me is there any great talent out there waiting in the wings to replace him? Why then are we so desperate to make him pack his bags for good? Even today Sachin Tendulkar can give you a 75 ball 100 maybe a run a ball 60 in the ODIs. Maybe a century in the first innings every 3 tests. So what? It is still the same if not better than any greater talent we can conjure up. Not to mention his vast experience which is always an asset in tight situations.

People ask if Sehwag can be dropped why not Sachin. They shout at the top of their lungs that the selectors are showing double standards. Sehwag and Ganguy were tolerated and given chances after chances for more than a year before they were dropped. We cry for Sachin's head if goes through a series without a century. Tell me, aren't we the ones who are showing double standards.

Sachin Tendulkar may not be the greatest ever. He may not be the greatest now. But he can still give 3 more years of good cricket if not great cricket. Can't we show a bit more respect to him and judge his performances objectively rather than by blind passion? The man deserver it for the 17 years of joy he has provided us. We as a nation need to treasure our heroes more because we do not have many of them and we definitely won't get someone like Sachin Tendulkar for some time to come. So savor the moments he provides you because it's not going to last much longer.

Sienna Miller is the new super women of the world

Sienna Miller is the new super women of the world

Do you know Sienna Miller? Who is Sienna Miller, which movie she acted and got a good name for her acting, oh that lady who dated Jude Law, ya you got it rite. Sienna Miller dated Jude Law the hottest Hollywood star previously not because she is famous actress.

She is expecting the movie 'Factory Girl', with an expectation that it will provide a break through in her career and will recognize the skills of her acting. Factory Girl is yet to be released in US. But for the fashion world Sienna Miller is not a new girl. She is no less than other hottest celebrities like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears who break the laws of dressing in public more frequently.

If we rollback a few days before using a time machine. I am not a narrow minded person who do fashion police and morale policing anywhere. I don't accept Sienna Miller's fashion trend will influence me. For the New York premiere of Factory Girl, Sienna Miller came as a chic in white dress, which is simple and it looked cute on her.

But that's not the story about, Sienna Miller was found as super women at the afterparty that day. Do you know how a superman looks like, see the movie superman returns for the outfit. I was really confused what happened to Sienna Miller who came as a chic in a white dress for premiere and for party as a superwomen. The outfit that she wore for the party changed to full black leather, which resembles the 60's dancers of America. Sienna Miller changed herself into black leggings. She wore extra large panty on the above, a fluffy top, a leather jacket and an ankle high boots with high heels.

Are we missing something on her, Oh my God where is the pants or a skirt, or a jean. Where is it? We have seen
Britney without panties, Sharon Stone without Bra, and Paris Hilton in transparent dresses, but have you seen any actress without pants or a skirt. It looked like Sienna Miller has just got up from her bed and came to the party. What sienna Miller is trying to prove to us, is she trying to say that I am Sienna Miller I am the super women of the world?

If the outfit was looking good on her, then there is no problem in that we might be encouraging to display like that in future too. But Sienna Miller was looking not only bad in the outfit but ugly. More over seeing a women's underwear is only fun if she is in your bed with you, on some magazine (which she got paid). But in which category did Sienna miller can be fit into? But we can say one thing. Sienna Miller out stead both Britney Spears and also Paris Hilton in Dressing for public functions and joints.

Sachin Tendulkar is Back with Vengeance

Sachin Tendulkar is Back with Vengeance

India won the 4th one day international match of West Indies tour to India yesterday. It was a match of excitement for all viewers, with a soldiery start from Robin Uthappa and Sourav Ganguly, India crossed its fifty runs at very faster Pace. Then With much solid performance of Rahul Dravid and Tendulkar partnership India crossed all the Bottlenecks and went ahead with a 250+ for 2 at 42nd over.

It is at the next over Rahul Dravid gave his wicket to provide acceleration in the runs, what followed in the minds of ordinary Indian cricket fans are, will it repeat Chennai like disaster. But what entered into the field is a thunder Dhoni who created much needed acceleration for the runs. Little master Sachin Tendulkar, rotated the strikes for sometime to anchor the team. After 44th over the fields of vadodara, saw the heavy thunders from the blades of Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Within just 36 balls India took more than 80 run with more fireworks and thunder strikes all over the ground.

Dhoni started his power strokes at 8th Ball that he faced in the game. Within the 30 minutes of the stay in ground, he scored 40 runs in 20 balls which include 3 sixes to the credit. Tendulkar showed his old strokes which tied the cricket fans all over the world again at vadodara yesterday. This show of batting from Sachin Tendulkar closed the mouths of critics who criticized Sachin Tendulkar for his form and injuries.

Yesterday match was anchored completely by the top order which saw its form, again just before the world cup. Yesterday match showed yet another change which was much requested by the fans of Indian cricket. Sourav Ganguly opened the game after a long time. On the game 3 of the tour it is Sachin Tendulkar who opened the game with Robin Uthappa, when will the best combination which rattled the teams will happen again. The combination of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar, the most successful combination which showed its sheer batting and provided great runs for India during matches must open in cricket World cup 2007.

Will they open in Sri Lanka tour, the only tour which is remaining for India before World cup 2007 is with Sri Lanka? We need the successful combination for opening the game. If not Sachin- Ganguly Combination then whose combination will help India to win the cricket world cup 2007.

Lindsay Lohan´s Career Is Going Down the Drain

Lindsay Lohan's Career Is Going Down the Drain

It seems that the troubled days for Lindsay Lohan have just begun, even if some initially said that she entered rehab to mend her career. A couple of days after Lohan checked into the posh Wonderland Center in L.A. to seek treatment for some unspecified addiction, sources from the set of her latest movie, 'I Know Who Killed Me' claimed her rehabilitation program was just a cover for a much bigger issue she was dealing with.

After last summer's public letter of admonishment, written by the CEO of Morgan Creek Productions, in which he quite openly criticized Lindsay's behavior on the set of 'Georgia Rule', calling her a 'spoiled brat' who used the 'exhaustion excuse' to hide her 'all night heavy partying', sources said that she might be doing the same thing for 'I Know Who Killed Me'.

The spies who talked to the media claimed having valuable information that proved the freckled actress is as irresponsible as ever and that she went to rehab not after making a 'proactive decision' on her own, but because the producers told her to. Apparently, the producers, distributors and the rest of the cast were not happy with Lindsay's wild ways, asking her to go to rehab and save her career.

Unfortunately, it didn't work out. Since she went to Wonderland, Lohan spent more time outside the facility than on its premises, which has also angered her fellow sufferers. Besides taking some time off to go to her AA meetings, Lohan also enjoyed some special treatment, as she was allowed to go out to have her Mercedes fixed and, believe it or not, a shopping spree with her mom and sis at Dior.

And it's not only Wonderland residents who are not willing to give Lindsay a break. According to the same unnamed sources, her fellow actors are also fed up with her. Big names like Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman have already instructed their managers to automatically turn down any offer that includes her name in the cast and chances are more will follow the same trend.

Meanwhile, her latest finished production, 'Chapter 27' that just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, has received very harsh critics. Dealing with the story of Mark Chapman, John Lennon's killer, the movie and Lindsay's performance was already heavily criticized by Lennon's son, Sean. 'It's a tacky thing to make a movie about. Lindsay was my friend', he said, stressing that he would have never thought her capable of scooping so low for a paycheck.

Jennifer Aniston gets an Indian nose

Jennifer Aniston gets an Indian nose

Jennifer Aniston ex wife of Brad pitt did a plastic surgery for her nose before two days. With that surgery she shaped her nose a little to get a new proper shape. This surgery on Jennifer Aniston nose got a new name as Indian Nose. This name is because this operation was done by an Indian Doctor who is residing in US.

But why Jennifer Aniston is caring much about her body now. She is in between a controversial Lip locking of Lesbian kiss type also. But why Jennifer Aniston is now caring more into body shapeing. Is there is any reason behind that. We can think one reason as the split up of Jennifer Aniston and Brad pitt who got hooked with Anjelina Jolie. Brad Pitt and Anjelina Jolie became Branglina. Is that is the reason for Jennifer Aniston's nose surgery. Is this surgery is the last surgery in Jennifer Aniston's Body or still more to come?

What do you think about that.

Baba Kalyani

Language: MALAYALAM

Director: Shaji Kailas
Cast: Mohanlal, Biju Menon, Jagathy Sreekumar, Mamta Mohandas, Venu Nagavalli, Murali, Sai Kumar, Indrajith, Shammi Thilakan, P. Sreekumar, Freddy, Narayanankutty, Bindu Panicker, Maya Moushmi, Siddique, T.P.Madhavan, Reshmi Nambiar, Manuraj, Kaviyoor Ponnamma, Anil Murali, Anoopchandran, Saiju Kurup

There are times when you see a movie and can't help feeling that it could have been better than what the end result is. Baba Kalyani is a movie of wastages. It does not utilize fully the talented team at its disposal. More disappointing is that it surprisingly does not generate the excitement or suspense that a crime/investigative thriller would normally arose. There is nothing new in the movie that you haven't seen before.

The plot is fairly simple. Baba Kalyani (Mohanlal) is an honest, intelligent and hard-working officer of the Anti-Terrorist wing of the Kerala Police. He comes across a plot to explode bombs at places of pilgrimage across Kerala with Kochi being its epicenter.

He and his team shifts to Kochi to investigate the hint's received. In order keep a low profile they are assigned various other assignments as a diversion, with Baba Kalyani himself taking the charge of an ACP.

During the course of his investigation Baba Kalyani begins to suspect Mohammed Haji (Sai Kumar), a reputed social worker with a prior history of being a religious extremist. He is an influential figure both in his religious community as well as in the local political community. His son-in-law, Zaheer Ahmed (Indrajith) is a college professor and also is actively involved in the terrorist activities in the state. Baba Kalyani learns that Zaheer and his group are planning multiple bomb explosions at a major pilgrimage in South India. Whether Baba Kalyani is able to reach them in time and thwart their plans forms the rest of movie.

Baba Kalyani is out and out a Mohanlal movie. He breezes through the role of the protagonist with tremendous ease and aplomb. The challenge for script writers and directors in the future would be to tap into the reserves of this great actor and show us something which we have not seen from him before. His acting in this movie is subtle and understated. The role itself is so similar to the one of Major Mahadevan in Keerthi Chakra that at quite a few moments in the film I was having a sense of déjà vu.

Unfortunately since the focus of the script is entirely on Baba Kalyani the rest of the characters are not given enough space to develop. You can actually count the number of scenes when Mahanlal is not on screen. This leaves a lot of characters in various states of degeneration. Some characters like that of Arackal Ashokan (Murali) is just left hanging in limbo leaving you to wonder the need for that character and sequence in the first place. Still other character sketches and sequences are brought to an abrupt end like that of his love affair with Ashokan's daughter Madhumita (Mamta). Again you are left wondering the relevance of this in the overall plot of the movie.

The main essence of any investigative thriller is the investigation itself. The excitement one gets from seeing the officer piece together the clues so as to find the real culprit is completely lacking. The plot feels half baked due to the lack of detail given to the investigation and the lack of intellect used in the process. This is surprising as the script was from S.N. Swamy, who gave us such films like Oru CBI Diary Kurippu. Without doubt he is the biggest disappointment of this movie. The only character that impresses you other than mohanlal's baba kalyani is that of Sai Kumar (Mohammed Haji) in which the actor really impresses you.

I was thankful that the direction was not as over the top as it was in the case of Shaji Kailas's previous movie Chinthamany Kulakkesu. Even though the director has done a creditable job in keeping the tempo and pace of the movie he falters in his shots and editing. The various shots and the supposed sleek editing (not at all kind to anyone with even a remote history of migraine) leave you utterly bewildered and confused. You are bombarded with so many visuals and quick cuts that you really feel like vomiting your guts out.

The song is fairly decent enough though it has no role whatsoever to play in the overall narrative and in fact slows down the tempo of the film.

To sum up Baba Kalyani is a movie which is all gloss and no substance. It is movie of wasted potential.

Once upon a time there was a shepherd looking after his sheep on the side of a deserted road. Suddenly a brand new Porsche screeches to a halt. The driver, a man dressed in an Armani suit, Cerutti shoes, Ray-Ban sunglasses,TAG- Heuer wrist-watch, and a Pierre Cardin tie, gets out and asks the Shepherd: "If I can tell you how many sheep you have, will you give me one of them?"

The shepherd looks at the young man, and then looks at the large flock of grazing sheep and replies: "Okay." The young man parks the car, connects his laptop to the mobile-fax, enters a NASA Webster, scans the ground using his GPS, opens a database and 60 Excel tables filled with logarithms and pivot tables, then prints out a 150 page report on his high-tech mini-printer. He turns to the shepherd and says, "You have exactly 1,586 sheep here."
The shepherd cheers," That's correct, you can have your sheep."

The young man makes his pick and puts it in the back of his Porsche. The shepherd looks at him and asks: "If I guess your profession, will you return my animal to me?"

The young man answers, "Yes, why not".

The shepherd says, "You are an IT consultant ".

How did you know?" asks the young man.

"Very simple," answers the shepherd.

"First, you came here without being called. Second, you charged me a fee to tell me something I already knew, and third, you don't understand anything about my business...

Now can I have my DOG back?"

Movie review of flim Guru

Movie review of flim Guru

Language : Hindi

Director : Mani Ratnam

Starring: Abhishek Bachan, Mithun Chakraborty, Ashwarya Rai, R.Madhavan, Vidya Balan

For long I have been a Mani Ratnam fan. I was thrilled by his Nayagan and Thalapathy, moved by his Anjali, Roja and Bombay and was made a romantic at heart by Mouna Ragam and Alaipayuthey. This really accentuated by disappointment at some of his works in the recent past. However Guru (even though it is by no means his best work) has brought back the belief that he still has it in him to attain the lofty standards of expectation he has set in us. Mind you it is not a great movie but it is a good enough movies which gives glimpses of his genius.

Guru is a simple rags to riches story of a man called Gurukanth Desai (Abhishek). The movie is about the various stages of his life - where he goes from being the son of a school teacher to establishing the biggest company in India and the people and challenges he encounters and overcomes in between. He starts off his journey at a petroleum co in Turkey. He leaves a successful career there to start a “bijness” of his own. His reasoning? If the company thinks that his work is good then why should he be working for the company? Why cant he work for himself? With Rs.15000 Guru sets out thus to make his mark in the Indian business world of the 1950s. However to start off he requires more funds. This predicament is solved by agreeing to marry Sujatha (Ashwarya), the sister of his friend. The fact that she is elder to him or that she has tried to elope with a lover (who leaves her stranded at the railway station) seems insignificant to him when compared to the fact that he will be getting Rs.25000 from her father as dowry.

Thus armed with a wife, a brother-in-law and some money he comes to Bombay to seek out his dreams. Indian business at those times was tightly controlled by a few elite. It was the time of license-raj and bureaucracy ruled supreme. Gurubhai overcomes these hurdles by bowing down at some instances, by ingenuity at others and even by brute force when required. The means never mattered to him. The end was all he cared for. This brings him in conflict with Manik Dasgupta (Mithun Chakraborty), the editor of a prominent newspaper called The Independent, Gurus one time mentor and a man who believes in and stands for the truth. He is against Gurus unscrupulous methods and wants to stop him by exposing his wrong doing in his newspaper. For this he assigns a similar minded and firebrand journalist Shyam (R. Madhavan) to expose many irregularities in the functioning style of Gurubhai. In all this only Manik Dasguptas grand daughter (Vidya Balan) supports Gurubhai. How Manik Dasgupta and Shyam try to expose Gurubhai and how Gurubhai overcomes these troubles forms the rest of the movie.

The acting in this movie is superlative. All the actors give a top-notch performance be it the main cast or the support crew. Abhishek is all encompassing in the title role. His dedication to the role is plainly visible. He has put on quite a bit of weight to lent credibility to his role as the older and wealthier Gurubhai. His range of emotions from being a simple villager to one of the greatest industrialist in India is well executed. Definitely his best work till date.

Ashwarya is the surprise package of the film. The plastic doll proves that in the hands of a capable director she can actually emote and not ham her way through the role. Her restraint and subtlety in executing the role of a village belle transforming into a dutiful wife of an industrialist is truly commendable.

The rest of the support cast does a creditable job with Vidya Balans essay of the handicapped girl being the one that springs to mind readily. Mind you, her role is so miniscule that you feel that she was wasted. The same applies for R.Madhavan. You cant help but feel that Mithun Chakraborty was not fully utilized and his character not fully developed.

The direction of the movie is top class. The technical details are very well done. The visuals are well etched. Mani Ratnam manages to keep our interest in the movie even though it could have gone out of control due to the scripts over indulgence with the main character. The movie goes at a good enough pace and does not bring about boredom at any point. My only complaint is that the songs are too close to each other. Then again Mani Ratnam keeps us entertained with some cool picturization of the songs

I must be honest when I say that I was not too impressed by A.R. Rahmans music for this movie when I heard it initially. But I started liking the music more after seeing its picturization. The songs mayya mayya and bin thera are catchy. While the visuals of barso re is equally as good as the song itself.

The main problem with the movie is its script. The film is not able to maintain the tempo and enthusiasm of the first half. The second half is a huge let down when compared to the first. It is only the acting and Mani Ratnams direction that saves the day. The movie is all about Guru. Period! The other characters with the exception of Ashwaryas are not clearly defined. The movie is about a grayish character. Surprisingly the movie seems hesitant and almost apologetic to expose Gurus shady deals. His illegal and unethical practices are either underplayed or justified. This leads to diluting the conflict between The Independent and Gurubhai. This is the biggest disappointment as it could have been exploited a potentially explosive confrontation between the main characters of this movie. However the end result is that the confrontation is so diluted it just fizzles out without a trace.

Guru is a movie that could have been great if only the makers had shown a bit more guts in dealing with the subject. In the end it feels hijacked by the one person on whom the movie is supposed to be based albeit from the grave.

Tendulkar ton spurs India to 341

Tendulkar ton spurs India to 341

On a morning when all the big boys came out to play, the first among equals smashed his 41st ODI century to set West Indies a daunting 342 for victory in the fourth and final game at the IPCL ground in Baroda. Having come in at 148 for 2, halfway through the innings, Sachin Tendulkar scripted a magnificent 76-ball hundred, reaching three figures off the final delivery, a push to midwicket. Mahendra Singh Dhoni came in and biffed a stunning 40 from just 20 deliveries, including three huge sixes, and there were sizeable contributions from Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid as the batsmen ran riot following Brian Lara's decision to field.

The final passage of play was just carnage, with Dhoni and Tendulkar walloping 75 from 39 balls after two century partnerships earlier had set the game up for the Indians. Tendulkar scampered his ones and twos with tremendous energy, and picked the gaps in the outfield when the opportunities came. There was one massive six off Marlon Samuels that sailed over midwicket, though he was extremely fortunate to be at the receiving end of two wretched bits of fielding.

First, Lara dropped a sitter to his left at cover when Tendulkar had made 85, and six runs later, Dwayne Smith allowed a flick off the pads to sail through his palms at deep square leg. It summed up a very ordinary fielding display from the West Indies, with India's batsmen targetting the weak arms with ruthless precision.

After his gamble at the toss, Lara had taken another punt with the new ball. Ian Bradshaw was back in the XI, but it was the sedate medium pace of Smith that he turned to as foil to Daren Powell, perhaps inspired by memories of Smith's 4 for 31 against India at Kuala Lumpur. He nearly had Uthappa early on as well, with umpire Amish Saheba turning down a leg-before appeal that looked fairly adjacent to the naked eye.

Uthappa though was quickly on his way, with a thick edge to third man and a steer in the same direction - shots that left Powell infuriated. Things came to a boil in his next over, with five wides, two sixes and a wicket. A misdirected bouncer started it, with the ball evading both Uthappa's attempted hook and Denesh Ramdin's leap on its way to the fence. Then, Uthappa took over, with a nonchalant slash for six over third man, and a magnificent loft over long-on, hitting through the line to a ball that wasn't even full.

The next ball was quicker and bounced a little more from short of a length, and the edge was nearly taken at first slip. It was always going to be difficult to carry on at that pace, and things certainly slowed down as Dravid took nine balls to get off the mark. By then though, Ganguly was in cruise control. Powell had induced a top-edged hook off a short ball from round the wicket, and West Indies zoomed in on this supposed frailty with disastrous results.

Both Smith and Powell were pulled disdainfully for four, and when the full delivery was directed at his legs, he moved out of the way and hit cleanly through the covers. The only thing that looked like stopping him was a dodgy back that required manipulation from the physio when he'd made 37, and after the treatment, India upped the ante.

Dravid was soon into his stride too, with lovely cuts for four off Rayad Emrit, and a glorious straight loft off Samuels. Samuels and Emrit reined things in somewhat though, with only 60 coming from the second and third Powerplays, after 67 had come in the first batch of 10. Runs though came steadily on a pitch where the grass cover was like a chimera. Ganguly's dismissal, giving Chris Gayle the charge, allowed West Indies to dream, but then Tendulkar came out and made their morning a nightmare.

The start was sedate enough, with both Dravid and Tendulkar clearly aware of what had transpired at Chennai when they tried to force the pace too soon. Here, they took 64 balls for the 50 partnership, picking off the singles and biding their time. When the acceleration came, West Indies didn't know how to cope. Gayle bowled tidily, conceding just 34 from his eight overs, but every other bowler came in for a fearful pummelling hammer as the shackles were broken.

Dravid took 77 balls for his 50 and then ticked along at nearly a run a ball, even as Tendulkar started to find the gaps with unerring regularity. The partnership was worth 118 in just 18.3 overs when Dravid's flail at Samuels dropped into the hands of long-on. But if Lara thought that was bring out some respite, he was sadly mistaken.

Dhoni came in, set himself and proceeded to unveil two of those mind-boggling shovelled sixes, but even his destructive ways were eclipsed by a master who timed his century to a nicety. It had been four years since Tendulkar struck a hundred in a winning cause, but with the grassy surface clearly to the slow bowlers' liking, you sensed that that was about to change.

World cup 2007: Review of Cricket Teams - England

World cup 2007: Review of Cricket Teams - England

About England Cricket

The founders of Cricket, England, have the distinction of not winning even a single ICC ODI event comprising of all test-playing nations. From the era of heavily bearded Grace to the heavily built Flintoff, the World Cup has been a unrealistic dream for this British side. Not known for their adaptability skills, the English side struggles whenever they are on tour. And this time, the World Cup is in the Carribean, which wont make it anyway easier for them.

Win-Loss Record

The World-Cup record of the English side is not good. Never failing to reach atleast the final-four stage in each of the first 5 World Cups, they did not even manage to go past round-1 in the last two editions. In the recent home World Cup, they were eliminated in the first round along with SriLanka. In the last edition, they denied to go to Zimbabwe and forfeited the match, hence allowing Zimbabwe to go through to the second stage. The then captain, Nasser Hussain, was criticised a lot for his decision to forfeit the match. Eventually, he retired after the World Cup.

Current England team players

This is the current probables list,

James Anderson
Ian Bell
Ravi Bopara
Stuart Broad
Glen Chapple
Rikki Clarke
Paul Collingwood
Alastair Cook
Jamie Dalrymple
Andrew Flintoff
Ashley Giles
Matthew Hoggard
Ed Joyce
Amjad Khan
Jon Lewis
Mal Loye
Sajid Mahmood
Paul Nixon
Graham Onions
Monty Panesar
Kevin Pietersen
Liam Plunkett
Matt Prior
Chris Read
Owais Shah
Vikram Solanki
Andrew Strauss
Chris Tremlett
Michael Vaughan
Michael Yardy

England team Approach

This was the squad for the 2003 World Cup,

Hussain(c)
Stewart
Anderson
Blackwell
Caddick
Collingwood
Flintoff
Giles
Harmison
Hoggard
Irani
Knight
Trescothick
Vaughan
White

We could find just 6 out of the 15 people, who traveled to SouthAfrica in 2003, found a place in the current probables list.

This shows much has changed in the shorter version of the game for the Briton. The invent of Twenty-20 has been the major reason for the change. But injuries have hit them hard in the last year. After the Ashes high, their casualties list has gone only one way. The major advantage is having two potential match winners in the form of Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff. They have to bank on this fact and hope these two to get their act together to have a successful World Cup.

Batting

South African born Pietersen and the future and the ex-captain, Flintoff are the destructors-in-chief. Collingwood, Bell and Vaughan are expected to play a major part as the wickets in the Carribean will suit their style of batting. Due to sudden exit of Trescothick and loss of form for Strauss, there is a big hole in the opening slot. The middle-overs will be crucial if the wickets are slow and low. And the English side has the right horses for those courses.

Bowling

With the sudden retirement decision of their premier fast bowler, Harmison, the English side will find it hard to replace him in such a short notice. Bowlers like Anderson, Mahmood should partner Flintoff and the part-timers like Collingwood and Darlymple will be handy in the Carribean surfaces. Giles and Monty are fighting for the sole spinner position with odds heavily favoring Monty. The English side will face problems in the power plays as they don't have the right combination to deal with the fielding restrictions and short boundaries.

Current form

Unlike 2005, 2006 has been a horrible year for England, to say the least. They won just 5 of their 15 ODIs last year. In the on-going tri-series, the English side has won just one out of their 5 matches played till now. Pieterson's injury has added the salt to injury. With the wicket keeper not yet decided and with all sort of batting and bowling woes, let me quote Michael Vaughan's own comments on the current English side, "In eight years in the England team, that was as low as I have ever seen players feel". Well, this shows their current status.

Cricket World cup 2007 Prediction

The English side are placed in Group - C along with the Fleming-led New Zealand, last time semi-finalists Kenya and John Davison led Canada. They have very good chance of making it to the super-eights if they avoid an upset against Kenya.

SWOT

The Recent form of the Black Caps has not been very good. In their last 22 matches played in the years 2006 and 2007, they have managed to win only 11, that's a win percentage on 50%. Having not reached the finals of any World Cup till now, they should be completely charged up to go for a Win this time. The Black Caps have a very bad win record in the grounds of Windies, Out of the 15 matches they have played they have managed to win only 3 games, out of which 2 are in port of Spain. Being rated as one of the strongest and most challenging teams in the world, and it has the potential to upset any team in the world. They need to use their strengths in experience and bowling to their advantage and create their winning ways. The games against England before the World Cup, might help them in learning how to go about the English team, which is more or less of the same potential.

Stars to watch

Their Captain and Opener Stephen Fleming, is expected to lead the challenge from the front. A prolific run scorer he is had a quiet 2006 and is expected to be their leading run scorer in World Cup. With Astle announcing his retirement the onus is on Fleming. Scott Styris, Brendon McCullum are the people who will have to play a perfect support role to their skipper. Shane Bond would be leading them in their Bowling department. He holds the best strike rate in the history of One Day International cricket of 26.5 (one player out for every 26.5 balls bowled). James Frankling and the spin king Daniel Vettori are their other spearheads.

World Cup Prediction

New Zealand is placed in Group C in the ICC World Cup 2007 groupings, along with England, Kenya and Canada. They are starting their Campaign against England, which would be a close match. Black Caps should have it easy against Kenya and Canada and proceed to the round 2 easily.

Shilpa Shetty wins UK´s celebrity Big Brother

Shilpa Shetty wins UK's celebrity 'Big Brother'

Sensational Shilpa has been crowned the winner of Celebrity Big Brother after polling 67% of the final vote.

A window-smashing scream welcomed the news, along with disbelief from the shocked actress. "Are you kidding me?" she bawled, accompanied by the compulsory waterworks.

Unlike earlier sobbing sessions, these were definitely tears of joy. Following her farewell to Jermaine she dashed to the toilet to gain some composure.

Amidst an awesome firework display, she emerged to an adoring crowd and frantically blew kisses. History has been made.

The self-proclaimed 'Angelina Jolie' of Bollywood, Shilpa's stay has been dominated by culinary-related rows and flirtations with a certain A-Team legend.

A beacon of calm when engulfed in a verbal storm, Shilpa's outlook was perhaps helped by her regular meditation sessions. She even gave Carole and Ken a tutorial on Day 2!

But when Jackiey and Jade came in to form their extended Family, it wasn't long before sparks started to fly. Who knew that the pronunciation of a two-syllable name would prove so problematic?

Shilpa's devotion to feeding the housemates didn't quite win her unanimous support, as Danielle, Jade and Jo debated the health and safety of her chicken. And then came the great stock cube argument...

But Shilpa managed to sail through stormy waters with her head held high and her oversized sunglasses firmly secured. Apologies and cider were soon heaped upon her and her infectious laughter was regularly heard bouncing off the walls of the House. Especially when there was a spot of Dirky Dancing...

Ah yes, Dirk. The articulate actress attracted the attention of a certain lovestruck A-Team star and their frequent fliratations were welcome relief. Dirk admitted carrying a torch for her back on Day 5, but alas the fire never quite ignited between them.

She also formed a close bond with Jermaine, who functioned as 'her rock' in times of need.

And with child-like wonder, she witnessed her first snow fall on Day 22.

Her time in the House was definitely full of emotion and incident, and she has won over a legion of new fans.

Shilpa - the deserved winner of Celebrity Big Brother - we salute you!

I should have stayed till the end - Dravid

I should have stayed till the end - Dravid

For nearly 35 overs, India had a vice-like grip on this match, but Rahul Dravid holed out to Riyad Emrit on the long-on rope, they went into freefall, 232 for 3 to 268 all out. "That was where we lost the game," said a visibly disappointed Dravid afterwards. "To lose 7 for 36 on a flat wicket was not acceptable. We needed to do better in those end overs."

India had rested the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh for this game, but Dravid was anxious to emphasise that the reverse had nothing to do with the 11 names on the team-sheet. "It's not about the personnel, it's about execution of the key moments in a match," he said. "I think 340 or 350 would have been a good score.

"The one new guy we tried out was Robin [Uthappa], and Suresh [Raina] also came up the order. Robin set the tone beautifully, but one of us needed to carry on and get a big score. I'll be the first to put my hand up and say that I should have stayed to the end. In hindsight, we could have waited a little longer before trying to force the pace. We didn't get one significant contribution."

Once the batting imploded to give West Indies the initiative, the bowlers needed to be close to their peak to force the issue. That didn't happen, despite Chris Gayle going to the first ball of the innings. Sreesanth offered up a wretched opening spell, and there were 25 wides in a generally indisciplined performance.

"Control of the shiny new white ball is something we're working on, and something we've spoken about," said Dravid. "We tend to give away too many runs in the first 10 or 12 overs. Maybe the bowlers felt today that we hadn't given them enough runs to play with, and that they needed early wickets. Having said that, Ajit [Agarkar] bowled superbly."

At 92 for 3, India might have sensed an opening, but it was all darkness thereafter as Samuels and Lara totted up 127 at a run a ball. "We were never really in the game once they got going," rued Dravid, before focussing on the few positives to emerge from the defeat.

The obvious one was Uthappa, who batted with the fluency of the Sehwag of old while careening his way to 70 from just 41 balls. Soon after he signed him for Liverpool, Bill Shankly used to send Kevin Keegan out to play with the exhortation: "Go and drop some hand-grenades out there, son." Though it's not known what Dravid or Chappell said, Uthappa certainly made an explosive impact. There were 11 fours and two sixes, the great majority straight off the bat's sweet spot, and the stands started bellowing out his name as the ball flashed past the ropes.

With seats on the flight to the Caribbean at a premium, at least one from Uthappa, Raina and Gautam Gambhir will miss out. The trio are pencilled in at the top of the order for this game and there was no doubt which man emerged today one step nearer a Caricom visa. Gambhir fluffed his lines, and may have to make way when Ganguly returns, while Raina yet again highlighted an exasperating inability to go beyond pretty 20s and 30s.

Uthappa has had a stellar season for Karnataka, scoring over 800 runs, and though Dravid had hardly had the opportunity to play alongside him, he was full of appreciation for the superb cameo. "He got us off to a flying start, set the tone and tempo for the innings," he said. "These young guys have courage and confidence and a lot of belief. He'll realise with experience though that when you get a start like that, you need to go on. That's what he'll learn with time. But for a guy playing just his fourth game, to play like that was pretty special."

It was a view echoed by Brian Lara, who admitted that the opening flurry had let him more than a little worried. "I've seen him bat in the Challenger, and once in the Caribbean," said Lara, when asked to assess what he had seen. "It was unexpected, and all the shots he played were excellent ones. He looked very compact and at times, he made the bowling look very easy. At one point, I thought we'd be chasing 400."

Unfortunately for India, a youthful rush of blood stopped Uthappa short, and further indiscretions from Dravid and Tendulkar meant that a blazing start was followed by a pathetic whimper of a finish.

Can Robin Uthappa be the answer for Adam Gilchrist

Can Robin Uthappa be the answer for Adam Gilchrist /h1>

Robin Uthappa, the karnataka player who is in the team after a long time scored a blistering 70 in chennai today against West Indies pacemen. It was the first game after a long struggle who is having a perfect comeback to the team. His blistering knock today at chennai proved his talent and said the selecters that Robin has some more cricket with him.

Robin Uthappa, the tall man who is son of Venu Uthappa an International Hockey referee had a very fine season last year in domestic cricket. Robin Uthappa was the highest scorer in that season which made selectors to turn their eyes on him. He got selected for the west indies series and haven't provided any oppurtunity in the first two matches. In the third One day international which is progressing in Chepauk Stadium in chennai Robin Uthappa got an oppurtunity to prove his skills again. This oppurtunity was provided because of the rest given to Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Robin Uthappa, came ground as an opener with Gautam Gambir had wonderful knock in the first over which yeilded him a 6 runs. Gautam Gambir who faced the second over got himself out in the deep region for zero. Robin Uthappa partnered with Suresh Raina, who is under pressure to perform well in the game. He was promoted to one down which is the place for Rahul Dravid. But Suresh Raina provided support to Robin Uthappa who batted as if he is in vengence with West Indian Bowlers. Runs came on board at 10 per over during his stay.

Finally Uthappa scored a blistering seventy in the game and used his oppurtunity to prove his skills for those who selected him. If Robin Uthappa performs well he will be the answer for Adam Gilchrist of Australia who is a Wicket Keeper Batsman and also for Mahendra Singh Dhoni who is also an wicketkeeper Batsman of India

Australian coach says NZ´s low standard hampering his side

Australian coach says NZ's low standard hampering his side

Australian cricket coach John Buchanan has thrown another big wind-up New Zealand's way, saying a lack of quality tri-series opposition is hampering the hosts' World Cup buildup. In what should provide a handy motivational speech for Sunday's trans-Tasman match here at the WACA ground, Buchanan complains substandard batting from New Zealand and England is not giving his bowlers the stern test they require.

His comments appeared in The Australian newspaper today under the headline "Appalling standard short-changing Australia: Buchanan". "Our ability to deliver yorkers, length balls, bouncers, variety balls (such as slower balls, cutters, etc) has not been placed under constant scrutiny by an opposition batting lineup," Buchanan wrote on Cricket Australia's website.

"This testing of our bowlers' response to situations when we have lost control (temporarily, hopefully) is not happening. "In essence, the batting efforts of our opposition are not assisting the development of our bowlers' one-day skills, and the decision-making that accompanies being placed under the microscope of competition.

"And while this is not occurring, we cannot have our fielding tested also for its ability to create and make opportunities." Buchanan has a history of off-field mind games. On the 2000 tour of New Zealand his detailed critique of individual Black Caps players was leaked to local media. But his latest comments are hardly outlandish, particularly after New Zealand's struggles with the bat.

Against Australia, New Zealand were dismissed for 184 chasing 290 to win in Hobart, then scored just 218 batting first in Sydney. Their breakthrough 90-run win against England on Tuesday came after they were 67 for five batting first. New Zealand's players were given today off training and media commitments in Perth today and it was left to New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief executive Martin Snedden to play a dead bat to Buchanan's comments.

"I've read the article and it's not my position to get stuck into that sort of stuff," Snedden said. "He's entitled to his views and we're entitled to focus on what we're trying to achieve without getting too distracted. "I'd imagine the players read it with a bit of interest, and it may even provide a little bit of motivation for them.

"I don't think that's necessarily what they need for motivation and I don't think you're going to see any sort of major reaction from our camp." England allrounder Paul Collingwood, speaking ahead of tomorrow's match against Australia in Adelaide, didn't offer a bite either.

"We're probably not (challenging Australia's bowlers) at the moment but hopefully we can turn that around and stretch them if that's what he wants to see. "'We obviously concentrate on our own game, I'm not going to get into a slanging match on that."

Snedden, meanwhile, pronounced himself happy with what he'd seen after cancelling his trip to an International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting in Dubai to join the team. He will remain on tour until Sunday's match, describing his visit as a show of support for coach John Bracewell and his team after the pressure of three consecutive losses. "I like what I'm seeing and I think the team's got really good harmony," Snedden said. "They're realistic about where they're at, and not getting carried away with a victory over England.

"They see it as a step forward but know they've still got some major issues to deal with, and are working hard to get it right." Snedden was quick to scotch reports of player dissatisfaction with Bracewell. "I've spoken to each of the senior players and picked their brains about what's happening. "All of them have indicated to me without hesitation that they support what's happening, that they're right in behind Bracewell and (captain Stephen) Fleming. "All of them simply say 'we've got to score more runs'."

Keira Knightley sues Daily Mail over link with anorexia death

Keira Knightley sues Daily Mail over link with anorexia death

Keira Knightley, the Pirates of the Caribbean star, has taken a libel action over a newspaper story that suggested she was losing too much weight and could be anorexic.

The 21-year-old actress believes the Daily Mail article suggested she had "dishonestly sought to mislead the public" over whether she has an eating disorder.

In the article, earlier this month, Rosalind Ponomarenko-Jones, who lost her daughter Sophie Mazurek to anorexia, discussed the impact of celebrities such as Knightley on vulnerable young women.

A photograph of her daughter, who was 19 when she died last month, was printed next to one of Knightley in a bikini. The article described the actress as "skinny" and said that "for ordinary young girls, attempting to emulate this image is often dangerous".

Lawyer Simon Smith said: "We wish to make clear that Ms Knightley has the deepest sympathy for the girl's family. However, Ms Knightley has publicly denied suggestions that she might be anorexic or have a similar eating disorder ... and will challenge the suggestion that she is ... to blame for the tragic death of the teenage girl by setting a bad example."

The case is due to go to jury trial at the High Court in London this year.
