Indian women enter finals

India was assured of a medal in the Asian Games tennis event with the women's team cruising into the final by taking 2-0 lead against Uzbekistan here on Wednesday night.

The women's team comprising Sania Mirza and Shikha Uberoi will now take on Taipei in the final today.

While Sania Mirza, ranked 67th in the world had an easy outing, Shikha Uberoi had to sweat it out before quelling the spirited challenge of Akgul Amanmuradova with a hard-fought 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 victory in a marathon tussle which lasted 189 minutes.

Sania Mirza got the better of Iroda Tulyaganova with a straight set 6-3, 6-0 verdict in a lop-sided contest which lasted just 54 minutes.

In the other women's team semi-final, Taipei defeated a sprited Japan 2-1.

In the men's semi-final, Japan got the better of Thailand 2-1 while Korea prevailed over Taipei with an identical margin.
