One Night Stands Can Turn Into Meaningful Relationships

The one-night stand just got a little more romantic. New study from the University of Iowa suggests that relationships that begin as a casual "hookup," have a fighting chance to turn into committed long-term relationships.

Author and UI sociologist Anthony Paik found that the average relationship quality was still better for those people who waited until they were serious to be sexually involved, compared to couples who began as "hookups," "friends with benefits" or casual dating relationships.

The study, published in the journal Social Science Research, gathered data from surveys completed by almost 650 straight adults from Chicago who revealed when their relationships became sexual. The participants were also asked questions involving their love for their partner, the future of the relationship, intimacy satisfaction and how their lives would change if the commitment ended.

After Paik eliminated those people who were not interested in serious relationships, he was able to determine that having sex early on in a relationship wasn`t necessarily the cause for any lack in quality.

"The study suggests that rewarding relationships are possible for those who delay sex," Paik, an assistant professor in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, said in a news release. "But it`s also possible for true love to emerge if things start off with a more `Sex and the City` approach, when people spot each other across the room, become sexually involved and then build a relationship."

These findings follow a previous study also by Paik that showed Chicago-area women who were involved with a friend were 44 percent more likely to stray. For men the likelihood was increased by 25 percent. If these same people were involved with a stranger or acquaintance the odds increased by 30 percent for women and 43 percent for men, according to a summary of the findings.

The reason for the lower quality scores found with the one-night stand relationships could likely be because some people are simply more likely to find relationships unrewarding and become more prone to "hooking up," Paik said.

Paik also found that the number of sexual partners someone has accumulated played a role because the more sexual partners people had, the more they prefer short-term, casual relationships, and the less likely they were to pursue the development of a lasting one.

What Paik didn`t expect to find was that most people he studied did "date" regardless of whether or not they were interested in finding love, a surprising result as he says dating falls under the category of romance.

"While hookups or friends with benefits can turn into true love, both parties typically enter the relationship for sex and the expectations are fairly low," Paik added. "In the casual dating category, some people think they`re headed for a long-term relationship, but there are also people who are only in it for sex."

Cervo: Maruti's Answer to Tata Nano?

India experienced a watershed moment when Ratan Tata fulfilled his promise with the launch of Nano, the most economic vehicle in the Indian market, and arguably, in the world. Ever since the launch of Tata Nano, the whole globe is behind the idea of cheaper wheels. Now, it's the turn of Maruti, who is seriously planning a car priced closer to Nano, and it could apparently be the Cervo, a compact five door mini that might put the other kids on the block in the shade.

The Cervo looks like a smaller Chevrolet Beat with cues from Honda Jazz's design. The phenomenal fuel efficiency is one of the USPs of this car.

Powered by Suzuki's 660cc engine – as against Nano's 623cc – the Cervo could be priced between 1.5 to 2 lakhs, a little higher than Nano. But Cervo looks too stylish and futuristic to be priced under 2 lakhs. So it's obvious that Maruti needs to delete some of the features available in the car, or use a cheaper material to make a potent contender to Nano.

Inside, the dashboard of the Cervo looks almost like the Swift, with the rectangular air vents in the centre and the circular ones on the sides. Power windows and airbags are available in the international markets but chances are that Indians will have to compromise on that.

Although not all can repeat the Nano story, Maruti has resources and expertise to come up with such a model at a cheap price without compromising on quality. But can they pull it off? Let's all hope so.

Lindsay Lohan`s mom says the actress will be moving away from California and back to New York after she gets out of drug rehabilitation.

Dina Lohan, during an often tense interview with NBC "Today" show co-host Matt Lauer on Friday, said her daughter was doing "wonderfully" after 14 days in jail and lashed out at California Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel, who put the actress there.

"She`s great," Lohan said. "She`s been through a lot. The judge played hardball. Lindsay was in with alleged murderers and she`s become friends with a lot of them. Lindsay rolled with the punches and she`s doing wonderfully."

Lindsay Lohan served 14 days of a 90-day jail sentence for violating her probation in a 2007 drug case. She was sent to a UCLA drug rehab facility for a court-mandated three-month treatment, and her mother said she`d be out soon.

Revel removed herself from Lohan`s case earlier this week after a prosecutor complained she improperly contacted experts or participants in the case.

Lauer prodded Lohan, noting that there were some observers who thought the 24-year-old actress had this coming to her because of bad behavior.

"I think that`s all propaganda and what people are reading," she told him. "As you know, you`re in the business of entertainment, so I think a lot of it is pre-orchestrated and you`re reading things that are not based on fact."

Lauer also asked her about a belief that her daughter was not well-served by those around her, including her parents.

"As a parent, you have to let her go a little bit," she said. "When she went out to Los Angeles when she was 19, I had to let her go and let her live and fall and fail and survive. Without failure, there`s no success. I was there in close proximity, but you can`t make your child not go out and go to a club and not get behind the wheel of a car. I certainly don`t condone any of that behavior."

"They`re gonna do what they`re gonna do when they turn 18, 19," Lohan said. "... And you kind of lose a little power and control, which you want to do for your child. You want to let them go. Without failure, there`s no success."

Said Lauer: "You`re confident she`ll come through it?"

"She`s already through it," Lohan said.

Michael Lohan said in an interview Friday on CBS` "The Early Show" that his ex-wife should be out of their daughter`s career "and I shouldn`t be any part of her career. I never was. I never was a manager or anything."

"I tried to do my best as a father. I made my mistakes. I wound up in jail. ... Lindsay certainly paid a price for that," he said. "... But it`s time to put everything aside. I thought Dina did that. But, obviously, you know, we have some work to do ourselves on this."

Dina Lohan said she had put her daughter in drug rehab the first time, and argued with Lauer over how many times Lindsay had been in drug treatment.

She said her daughter`s life has been under a microscope because of tabloid interest.

"You can`t blame it all on the tabloids," Lauer said. "She`s made some wrong decisions."

Lohan said Lindsay will be coming to New York. California is "a wonderful state," she said, but "it`s a different game you play there, the court system is a little different."
